The Diet of a Mr Universe

When I was training for the Mr Universe title, my  diet was a lot different to what it is now and as a lot of our members seem to be interested in what I ate back in 1996, I decided to write this article. Read on and enjoy the diet of a Mr Universe.

The title “Mr Universe” conjures images of sculpted bodies, bulging muscles, and superhuman strength. Achieving such a physique is no small feat, and it requires not only rigorous training but also a meticulously crafted diet plan. The diet of a Mr Universe is a crucial component in their journey to becoming the pinnacle of physical fitness.

Protein is King

One of the cornerstones of a Mr Universe’s diet is protein. Protein is essential for muscle repair and growth, which are the bread and butter of bodybuilders. Typically, Mr Universe contenders aim for around 1.2 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. Common protein sources include lean meats like chicken, turkey, and fish, as well as plant-based options such as tofu, tempeh, and legumes.

Carbohydrates: The Energy Source

Carbohydrates are the primary energy source for these athletes. They provide the necessary fuel for intense workouts and help replenish glycogen stores in muscles. Whole grains, such as brown rice and quinoa, as well as starchy vegetables like sweet potatoes, are staples in the diet of a Mr Universe.

Healthy Fats for Balance

While many may associate bodybuilders with a strict no-fat diet, healthy fats play a crucial role in their nutrition. These fats support hormone production, joint health, and overall well-being. Sources like avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil are incorporated into their diets in moderation.

Calorie Control and Macronutrient Ratios

Controlling calorie intake is a critical aspect of any bodybuilder’s diet. Mr Universe competitors often aim for a calorie surplus to support muscle growth during bulking phases. During cutting phases to reduce body fat and enhance muscle definition, they transition to a calorie deficit.

The distribution of macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, and fats) varies based on training phases. In bulking phases, the emphasis is on more carbohydrates and calories, while cutting phases shift focus towards a higher protein and lower carbohydrate intake.

Meal Timing and Frequency

To keep their bodies fuelled, Mr Universe competitors typically consume 5-6 meals a day. This frequent eating pattern ensures a steady supply of nutrients, optimises metabolism, and prevents excessive hunger, which can lead to overeating or poor food choices.

Supplements and Hydration

Supplements can play a role in the diet of a Mr Universe. Common supplements include whey protein, creatine, branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), and multivitamins to ensure they meet their nutritional needs.

Hydration is also of paramount importance. Dehydration can severely affect performance and recovery. Bodybuilders drink plenty of water and often include electrolyte-rich beverages to maintain proper fluid balance.

Avoiding Processed Foods

Highly processed foods, such as sugary snacks and fast food, have no place in the diet of a Mr Universe’s. They focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods to ensure their bodies receive the vitamins and minerals needed for optimal performance.

Cheat Days and Rest

Even Mr Universe contestants need a break. Many incorporate occasional “cheat days” to satisfy cravings and promote psychological well-being. Rest days are equally important, as the body needs time to recover and rebuild after strenuous workouts.

The Art of Dieting

The diet of a Mr Universe is a science, but it’s also an art. Adapting to individual needs, goals, and preferences is essential. What works for one competitor may not work for another.

Beyond the dietary specifics, discipline, consistency, and a strong work ethic are vital. Mr Universe contestants are incredibly dedicated, not only to their training and diet but also to their mental and emotional well-being. They understand that achieving peak physical condition requires a holistic approach.

In conclusion, the diet of a Mr Universe is a well-balanced and carefully calibrated regimen that prioritises protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. With calorie control, meal timing, and strategic supplements, these athletes sculpt their bodies into awe-inspiring forms. Their discipline, dedication, and ability to adapt make them champions not only in physique but in lifestyle and mentality as well.
